Formula for Converting Cat Years to Human Years

How to calculate human years when you know the cat's age

For cats that are one year old or younger, their age is multiplied by 15. After the first year, a cat's age is approximately equivalent to 15 human years.

The second year adds 9 more years, making the cat 24 years old in human years after exactly two years of life. After that, the rate decreases and each additional year after the age of two adds 4 years to the total.

Here’s a calculation example:

Suppose the cat is 4 years old. How old is that in human years?

The first two years: 24 years

  • 2 additional years: (4 - 2) * 4 = 8 years

Adding together 24 years + 8 years equals 32 years.

The cat's age in human years: 32 years

How long do cats live?

Several factors influence how many years a cat may live. Just like humans, a healthy lifestyle is also beneficial for cats. This includes providing a stress-free environment at home, a healthy diet, and regular vet check-ups.

The breed of the cat also plays a role. Common domestic cats can live up to about 25 years old. It's not uncommon for purebred cats to live longer than 15 years. It's also undeniable that good genes can ensure a longer lifespan and better overall health.

Whether a cat is an indoor cat versus an outdoor cat also matters significantly. Indoor cats generally face fewer risks of disease, predators, and accidents.
